Educating Investors One Howl At A Time

My name is Donnie Nguyen and I started Wolves of Investing to share what I know about investing.

I began actively investing in the stock market in the year 2000 – The Dot-Com Bubble. Knowing very little about the stock market, I put my entire savings into a telecom mutual fund only to see it lose about 80% of its value over the next year. I ended up selling at a 50% loss.

This humbling experience taught me that I had a lot to learn! So I decided to hit the books on everything I could about stocks before putting any more of my hard earned money into the market.

I began with the writings of Benjamin Graham, Peter Fisher, Peter Lynch, Ken Fisher, and the Oracle of Omaha – Warren Buffett.

In 2005, I started to invest again – at the start of the Housing Bubble. I used my 401k to invest in stock mutual funds and my Roth to invest in individual stocks.

My studying paid off! In the Great Recession from 2007 to 2009, I didn’t panic. I stayed fairly aggressive in my 401k and was able to take advantage of the 440% rise in the stock market from 2009 to 2018.

My Roth didn’t gain as much but that was OK. I viewed my Roth as a science lab and I was the mad scientist running trading experiments.

I tested swing trading, options, and a few other things before finally believing in the immense power and value of buy-and-hold stock investing. My style today is about 90% buy-and-hold and 10% swing trading.

I truly believe that the stock market is the best way to grow your wealth over time. A $10,000 investment in the S&P 500 growing at 10% annually for 50 years would be worth $1.17 million. Now that’s exciting!

By investing regularly, capital appreciation, and dividends, I’ve managed to grow my stock portfolio 100-fold. It’s not a million dollar portfolio yet, but steadily trending that way.
